Newcomers

Welcome Newcomers

We welcome you into our congregation. We hope that you have found the St. James family to be a warm and friendly one. There are many events and activities that provide opportunities for you to make connections with  St. James. A few are listed below, check the calendar and additional web pages for details.

A few words about "Welcome"

Saint James is a truly eclectic collection of people representing all parts of the community. Most of us are straight, but some of us are members of the LGBTQ community. Some of us have served in the military. Others have an unswerving commitment to peaceful conflict resolution. We come from the city, the county, and from the South Hill neighborhood where our church enjoys a beautiful view of Bellingham Bay. Our fellowship includes teachers, poets, artists, surgeons, engineers, and the unemployed. Some of us have been going to church our whole lives. Others are just getting started in the journey.

We welcome you just as you are. Simply bring your questions and an open spirit.

Sunday Mornings

Each Sunday after the worship service there is a coffee hour in the Horizon Room overlooking Bellingham Bay. The Adult Bible Study also meets each Sunday before the worship service in the Lounge. The chancel choir sings during worship, and once a month the bell choir plays special music. Church school classes meet during worship for grades preschool through high school. Nursery services are available with qualified caregivers.

New Members Classes

We offer a New Members Class 1-4 times a year.  The class is an informal opportunity to ask questions about what it means to be a Presbyterian, what it means to be a member of St. James, and any other questions you may have.

Weekly Activities

Cross-fit exercise classes are offered on Tuesday and Friday afternoons and a stretch yoga class meets each Thursday morning. The Men's Bible study meets each Wednesday morning.

St. James Chancel Choir has rehearsal Thursday evenings at 7:30pm in the Sanctuary Choir Loft, led by skilled choir director Carolyn Mullen. It’s for all who like to sing.

St. James Bell Choir rehearses weekly at 6:30 on Thursdays in the Horizon Room. The bell choir plays for worship once a month. Carolyn Mullen is the director.

Monthly Activities

If you love to read, the St. James Literary Society Book club meets the 4th Monday of each month. Family Game Night, a potluck dinner followed by your favorite board game is regularly scheduled. Fellowship occurs in many settings such as the Young Adults Fellowship for people in their 20s - 40s and the Primetimers for people 50 and older. The Presbyterian Women’s Association meets for a salad potluck luncheon and program on the last Tuesday of each month. From September through May, the luncheon is preceded by a Bible Study. More activities of Bible study and fellowship are planned throughout the year.

Our Mission

We are a welcoming Christian community, seeking God’s purpose, listening for God’s message, and sharing God’s love.

St. James since 1889

St. James is an inclusive, theologically progressive, and ecumenically active congregation that celebrates with a traditional, liturgically–based worship service in a church that overlooks Bellingham Bay. We are fortunate to be surrounded by the bay, mountains, and located near Western Washington University. In 2009, St James celebrated its 120th anniversary and we look forward to many more years of active involvement in our community.

Great Staff

St. James has a talented paid and volunteer staff that includes a director of educational programs, music director, custodian, secretary, organist, and youth leader. Volunteer staff members include a parish nurse, librarian, and treasurer.

Never too young, never too old

Our congregation supports a wide range of ages from birth to 102 years young that are volunteer– minded. Our youth group is dynamic, and enjoying growth. The children lead worship, take mission trips, and are a vibrant, active part of our congregation.
