In 2007 and early 2008 Saint James Presbyterian Church, in partnership with Dr. Nuhad Tomeh, helped lead an effort throughout the North Puget Sound Presbytery to provide school and health supplies to Iraqi refugee children that have gathered in Damascus, Syria. Dr. Tomeh, who visited our presbytery in May 2006, is the Presbyterian Church USA's liason to the Middle East Council of Churches.
One-hundred fifty kits and thirty pounds of other supplies were sent to the National Evangelical Church in Damascus to help support their ministry to refugees who have fled from the violence that plagues Iraq. This was an opportunity to give a much needed gift to people that have lost practically all that they own and to let them know that Christians in the world care about their well-being.
In early May 2008 the kits were distributed by Pastor Boutros to the Iraqi children during a worship service at the National Evangelical Church in Damascus. During this time, Pastor Boutros explained the role that Saint James had played in this ministry. Many hearts were touched and the Iraqi children felt a connection to children in our part of the world who had participated in preparing the kits. Our thanks goes out to everyone who participated in this effort.
Please enjoy this gallery of pictures which were taken while the school and health supply kits were being given to the families of the children.
